In each of the training seminars described below, participants are encouraged to share scenarios from their experiences. The emphasis is on practice, rather than theory. The format is highly interactive with lecture kept to a minimum. In addition, participants leave with workplans or checklists to help them continue learning and practice after the session.

BOARDSMANSHIP: WORKING WITH AND FOR NONPROFITS - Nonprofit agencies are always looking for volunteers, particularly for their boards. Why should you consider being a board member? What are your roles and responsibilities? How does a nonprofit function? What is the essential relationship between the board and the agency? How can you benefit, personally and professionally from serving on a nonprofit board?

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT - What is conflict? How do you respond to conflict? What is Principled Negotiation? What skills do you already have and can use?

EFFECTIVE MEETINGS - When do we need a meeting? Why do we need a meeting? What kinds of meetings are there? What makes an effective meeting? How can I improve my role in a meeting as leader or as participant? Using these questions as a framework, this training seminar will address the problems at each stage of the meeting process.

FACILITATION - What is the role of facilitation in group meetings? In team building? How should the facilitator prepare? What skills does the facilitator need to have?

GROUP DYNAMICS - What is a group? What kinds of groups are there? What is the relationship of the individual to a group? What roles do people play? How are decisions made? What makes a group effective? Ineffective? What kinds of agendas are there? What is the role of minutes? How do groups problem solve?

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS - What are the variables when two people communicate? What role does culture play? Perception? Semantics?

INTERVIEWING - How do you design questions in a job interview? How do you design questions for a reference? How do you prepare for an interview?

INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION - What is self-concept? Self-esteem? Self-disclosure? How do values, perception, language affect your communication ability? What role does non-verbal communication play?

LEADERSHIP - What is the relationship of the leader to the group? What are the components of leadership? How does one lead oneself? What type of leader are you? What is the relationship of task orientation to people orientation?

LISTENING - What are the components of listening? What is active listening? What are the skills necessary to be a good listener? How can you practice better listening?

PRESENTATION SKILLS - How do you prepare for a speaking situation? How can you analyze the situation? How can you organize your materials? When and how should you use audio-visual tools? How do you handle stage fright?

STRATEGIC PLANNING – What is the vision of the organization? What is the organization's mission? What must be done to achieve results? Throughout the strategic planning sessions, participants will be guided through interactive, planning exercises that focus their efforts with the result of maximum participation and consensus.

These topics can be regrouped in a variety of ways. For example, leadership can be part of group dynamics or intrapersonal communication; group dynamics can include listening, effective meetings, facilitation and leadership. Boardsmanship is included, because we have found that there is an interest and need for people with some knowledge of serving on a board as a volunteer activity. Such a workshop also illustrates the carry-over of work-related skills to other aspects of a person's life and vice-versa.

Custom designed workshops are available to address the issues of individual groups. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
