Concerns regarding the potential for an influenza pandemic are growing, as a result of the spread of avian influenza in poultry flocks in Asia and rising numbers of human infections and fatalities linked to the avian flu strain. Experts are worried that the next influenza pandemic is developing. As a result, the National Health Policy Forum (NHPF) recently called attention once again to its background paper Tick-Tock: Preparing for the Next Influenza Pandemic, released in August 2004. "The document is a valuable resource for understanding the nature of pandemic influenza and the key challenges responding to this disease threat," according to NHPF.
