Public Health at the Crossroads: Past, Present, Future
Part II: The Urban - Suburban Connection
July 31, 1996
Increases in infections and communicable diseases are not only urban public health issues, but also have significant health, monetary and social impacts on New Jersey's suburban and rural populations. Epidemiologic research, the surveillance of communicable and infectious diseases, public operation and the operation of public laboratory services are among the essential functions of public health. This brief looks at ways that New Jersey's public health system -- with shrinking funding and resources -- is responding to increased cases of Tuberculosis (a re-emerging communicable disease) and newly emerging diseases, such as Lyme disease. Analysis includes both New Jersey-specific and national data. Includes tables on active Tuberculosis cases in New Jersey's 21 counties and 19 major cities. [13pp]
